What is Nutritious Fish?

We're an online fishmonger offering free delivery of sustainable fresh fish and shellfish across Sussex. We also provide recipe inspiration and cooking tips to help you make super-healthy fresh fish and shellfish part of your everyday eating.

What types of fresh fish and shellfish do you sell?

Fish: We sell many different types of fresh fish - both white and oily - and these can be ordered as ready-to-cook boneless fillet portions, side fillets or whole fish (gutted & cleaned). Our high-welfare Loch Duart salmon and ChalkStream® trout is sashimi-grade and does not require freezing before eating. Shellfish: We sell live mussels, clams and lobsters, plus fresh prawns, scallop meats and prepared crab meat.

I like planning my meals! Will I find out in advance what my fresh fish selection contains?

Yes, we’ll send you an email before your order is delivered confirming what's coming, plus some receipe suggestions so you can start planning how to enjoy it.

I don’t live in Sussex - will you still deliver, or post our order out to us?

Currently, we only offer our free door-to-door home delivery service to customers in Sussex. We don't post or courier orders. However, please drop us a line at and, if you're close to one of our Sussex deliveries, we may still be able to help. We're always looking to meet new customers and spread the word.

Will you still deliver to me if I'm out?

Yes. We're happy to deliver to you if you're out. But due to the perishable nature of fresh fish and shellfish - and our compostable paper packaging - it's not advisable to leave deliveries out in the open for too long. If you cannot be in for your delivery (or require a no-contact delivery due to coronavirus self-isolation) we are happy to leave your delivery in a fridge/coolbox in your porch, garden, garage, shed or outbuilding. Just add a note to your delivery booking.

How will my fresh fish come packaged?

We use compostable plant-based wrapping, trays and closure stickers for our fish and shellfish. This means it can be added to your food waste bin, compost bin or garden compost and will break down into organic material in a matter of weeks. You can also freeze your fresh fish in the paper it arrives in. Our branded paper bags are from a manufacturer which sources its paper sustainably and which is audited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This means they must meet strict criteria when sourcing their materials to ensure their paper is ethically sourced. Our larger, whole fresh fish fillets are packed in waxed cardboard boxes to protect your fish during transit.

How do I contact you about changing a delivery day/time?

To change a delivery day/time it’s best to phone us as soon as possible on 01273 658200 to arrange an alternative time.

Do I need to order fresh fish every week or can I order ad hoc?

You can order ad hoc, as often as you like. It's up to you. Ordering weekly is the best way to eat a healthy, balanced diet of at least two portions of fresh fish a week. However, you can also order your fresh fish fortnightly or monthly - in fact, as frequently / infrequently as you like. TIP: our fresh fish selections come in three sizes: small, medium and large. So, if you're planning to be away for a weekend, just order a larger size one week and pop some your fish in the freezer to eat the following week!

How do I provide specific feedback about my order / your service?

We want you to be 100% satisfied when you buy from Nutritious Fish. We maintain high levels of quality-control, price competitiveness and hygiene. If there is a problem, we'd love the opportunity to rectify it immediately and we welcome all feedback. If there is anything you’re not completely happy with, please contact our Customer Services team as soon as possible at or call them on 01273 658200. Two weeks after every purchase you make on our website you will receive a link to an online customer feedback survey. You can complete this survey anonymously, however, we will not be able to rectify any specific problems unless you contact Customer Services in person.

Do you supply fresh fish recipe cards with your orders?

We don't, but we have a comprehensive Online Fresh Fish Recipes section on this website which is focused upon the home cook and is packed with fresh fish recipes for both beginners and the more experienced. You can even filter recipes by cooking times and methods, depending on how much time you have. We don't create printed recipe cards as our aim is to be as sustainable as possible and - as with our packaging - we're minimising unnecessary paper to reduce waste. The Online Fresh Fish Recipes section is great for viewing on your phone as you shop for ingredients, and you can also use your phone/tablet/home hub to guide you through recipes as you cook. Part of the Nutritious Fish service is recommending recipes you may want to try with your fresh fish orders. We’ll email you 24 hours before your fresh fish is delivered with a few receipe suggestions so you can start planning how to enjoy it.

Do you just sell fresh fish and shellfish?

We sell lots more than just fresh fish and shellfish, and we're always increasing our range. In our Online Shop we also sell a range of high-quality ingredients that you can use to make delicious fish and shellfish dishes, including: Sardinian dried pastas; Spanish bomba rice for paellas; Italian carnaroli rice for seafood risottos; Italian 'nduja spicy salami; squid ink; alioli and romesco sauce; San Marzano D.O.P. tomatoes. We also sell a range of fish cooking equipment, including filleting knives, paella pans and fishbone tweezers.

How should I store fresh fish?

When we deliver your order, pop it straight in the fridge (in the compostable greaseproof paper in which it is wrapped). Fresh fish is best enjoyed the same day it's delivered by us to you, or within 2 days. Each pack features a label with a 'Use By' date which will be 2 days after the date your fish was packed and delivered. Alternatively, if you're planning to eat your fish 2+ days later, freezing is recommended to maintain freshness. To freeze your fish, place it straight in the freezer as soon as possible - it freezes well in the compostable greaseproof paper in which it is wrapped. It will be fine for up to two months after the 'Use By' date. Defrost your fish thoroughly before use and, once defrosted, use on the same day. Do not re-freeze. Please remember to dispose of the compostable greaseproof paper in your food waste bin, compost bin or garden compost. It will break down into organic material in a matter of weeks.

How should I store live and fresh shellfish?

Live shellfish (without shells removed) should be stored in open containers in the fridge, loosely covered with clean, damp paper towels or cloths to prevent them from drying out. The optimum storage temperature is 4-8°C. Temperatures of 1°C or lower (especially freezing temperatures less than 0°C) can kill shellfish. Do not:

  • Store shellfish in airtight containers (boxes or bags) because they need to breathe
  • Store in water or directly on ice since the fresh water may drown them
  • Discard mussels, oysters, clams or any other live shellfish if their shells crack or break
  • Discard any shellfish if the shells are open and do not close when you tap them - live shellfish will "clam up" if their shells are tapped

Do you offer free delivery?

Yes, we deliver free across Sussex Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays. To book a free delivery slot: 1. Firstly, place your order in our online shop - this provides us with your full delivery address. 2. Secondly, book your free delivery slot here - you only need to enter brief details at this stage as we'll automatically match your postcode with the full delivery address on your order. Unfortunately, we don't offer same-day delivery as we order our fish the day before we deliver, and collect it first thing on the day of your delivery. We may contact you prior to delivery to ask if you can accommodate an earlier/later slot, if we're delivering nearby. This is to make our delivery schedules as efficient as possible and optimise mileage and carbon emissions - thank you in advance for your flexibility! Once you've booked your delivery slot, you'll receive an immediate system-generated confirmation email, and a text reminder 24 hours in advance. We'll also be in touch the day before to confirm everything and send you some links to some useful recipes and preparation advice.

Can you vacuum-pack my fresh fish in plastic?

It's not our preferred packaging method, but we can offer this on request.

I'm new to buying fish and shellfish - what should I buy and how much?

One of the benefits of ordering from Nutritious Fish is that we're always here to guide you on what to buy... Perhaps you have a certain recipe in mind or a particular ingredient you want to cook with your fish? Maybe you're cooking for a particular occasion, or number of people, and need advice on what quantities to buy? How do I find the right recipe for the fish I've ordered?

There's 3 main ways to navigate our Online Recipes section... (1) Fish type: At the top of the Online Recipes page you can click on a series of buttons to choose your preferred fish type. For example, if you have ordered salmon, you can jump to a page that only lists our salmon recipes. (2) Preparation: You can filter all recipes by the time it will take to prepare them. Recipes with a green dot are classified as 'Easy' and can be ready in 30 minutes or less; recipes with an orange dot are classified as 'Moderate' and are better when you have more time. This could be especially useful if you're deciding what to cook on a busy weekday vs. at the weekend. (3) Cooking style: You can filter all recipes by the way the fish needs to be cooked e.g. Bake, Grill, Pan Fry, Steam, Pie etc. This could be especially useful if you're cooking for a particular occasion, number of people or want a healthier option. You can use just one of these navigation tools, or a combination of them.

I'm new to using fresh fish and shellfish at home - how do I prepare and cook them?

One of the main benefits of ordering from Nutritious Fish is that you have the option of buying fully prepared and portioned fresh fish fillets that are ready for cooking. Do fresh fish and shellfish contain allergens?

Yes, fresh fish and shellfish are classed as allergens, including:

  • Fish - the majority of our produce is fish
  • Crustaceans - this includes crabs, lobsters, prawns, shrimps, langoustines, crayfish and some stocks
  • Molluscs - this includes mussels, clams, cockles, oysters, scallops, squid, octopus, whelks and some stocks

Are your fish and shellfish wild or farmed?

We sell both wild and farmed fish, but we have a particular focus on sustainability. Sustainable farmed fish are often a better choice than endangered wild fish species. Choosing sustainably farmed fish helps reduce the pressure on wild fisheries and allows populations to rebuild.


We sell Loch Duart salmon which is a high-welfare farmed fish. Loch Duart was the first salmon farming company in the world to become approved under the RSPCA Assurance Scheme (originally known as ‘Freedom Food’). It is also accredited by Label Rouge and also compliant with ISO 14001 which sets out the criteria for an Environmental Management System (EMS) improving resource efficiency, reducing waste, and it assures that environmental impact is both measured and reduced. We sell ChalkStream® trout which is a high-welfare farmed fish. The secret to these beautiful trout is the famous Chalk Streams, Test and Itchen in Hampshire. Spring water that has been filtered through the chalk down land into underground aquifers, feeds these rivers. The water is rated class A by the Environment Agency, the highest achievable grade. ChalkStream® farms are certified under the leading quality standards and the RSPCA Assurance Scheme. Mackerel & Herring:
The mackerel and herring we sell is from the Shetland islands and caught in the North Atlantic sea. All fish purchased is caught within the quota limits set by the European Union. Find out more here.

The sardines we sell are caught in inshore waters in Cornwall. The Cornish Sardine Fishery is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Find out more here.

We sell high-welfare mussels which are farmed and rope-grown in St. Austell Bay in Cornwall. These mussels are grown in the highest-grade clean ocean waters, providing the very best quality mussels available. Find out more here.

We sell scallops from the Shetland King Scallop Fishery which has achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) status for sustainable management practices. The clean, nutrient-rich North Atlantic waters around Shetland’s coastline create the perfect conditions for these shellfish to thrive. Do you have a shop where I can buy from you in person?

No we don't have a shop or sell in person from our prep kitchen - we're purely an online business.

I've just ordered online - can I have a delivery today?

Unfortunately, we don't offer same-day delivery as we order our fish the day before we deliver, and collect it first thing on the day of your delivery.

How do you price your fish?

Our pricing is clear and transparent. We avoid using traditional fishmonger “per kilo” pricing as we think this can be confusing and unclear. We prefer retail “per item” pricing so the price you see is the price you pay. We also explain our weights and sizes. Fish and shellfish are a natural product which means weights and sizes can vary. We aim to explain these so you know what you’re buying and how many people it will feed. The boneless fillet portions in our bestselling Mixed, Oily and White Fresh Fish Selections each weigh 180-200g. A standard pack of butter is 250g so it’s around three-quarters of that. Our boneless fillets are more generous than the average supermarket portion which means they go further and offer better value-for-money. We sell whole fish in a range of weights and sizes which is indicated on each product listing. When you buy whole fish and ask for them to be filleted, there is natural wastage in the preparation process (skin, bones & internal organs). We aim to state the weight of the fish you'll receive after preparation so you know what you’re buying and how many people it will feed.
